TetraMap® is an effective tool for helping us to understand our natural preferences and, more importantly that of others.  By raising our awareness we can take steps to build better relationships, improve team working, and achiever stronger and more sustainable results.

But, how easy is it to have a difficult conversation, make rational decisions and consider multiple perspectives when your resilience is low, you’re tired, stressed and emotionally challenged?  

There are many effective methods and I recently discovered HeartMath®.  On further research I decided to become a certified coach so I could learn more and, share with others.  On the programme I discovered powerful yet simple techniques which have been scientifically validated by over 20 years research.

 I have always been fascinated by the strength of the heart – it’s my “go to place” when I’m searching for answers or, courage when I’m feeling anxious.  It is my inner source of wisdom and I trust what it is telling me rather than letting my head rule.    

On the certification programme I learnt some fascinating heart facts. 

Did you know?

The heart starts to form in the fetus before the brain and has it’s own complex nervous system “the heart brain”

•The heart sends far more signals to the brain than vice versa

•It’s electromagnetic field can be measured several feet away from the body (5000 x stronger than the brain)

•The heart signals especially affect the brain centres involved in decision-making, creativity and emotional experience.

In simple terms, when we experience stress our Autonomic Nervous System is activated for a fight, flight or freeze response. If the stressor is a real threat to our survival, then that’s appropriate. However, most of the stresses we experience in the modern world are not threats to our survival, they are ego or psycho-social threats and, as such a fight, flight or freeze response is inappropriate and unhelpful. It’s inappropriate and unhelpful for two reasons.

1.Stress causes the release of Cortisol. Releasing too much Cortisol regularly over weeks, months and years damagesour health and wellbeing, drains our resilience and makes it more likely that we’ll develop illnesses.

2.Stress causes chaos in the heart’s rhythms. This chaos sustains activity in the brain’s stress centre (the Amygdala) which in turn decreases activity in the brain’s logical and rational centre (the Cortex). This explains why, under stress, we sometimes can’t think straight and might do and say “stupid things”.

HeartMath techniques are designed to quickly and effectively bring the heart in to a coherent rhythm and, in doing so send a calm message to the brain that “everything is OK”.  This increases activity in the cortex and calms down our emotional irrational brain.  

By building and practicing these techniques you can approach any situation with an inner strength and calmness.   I have also seen how HeartMath techniques can build team coherence resulting in natural collaboration and rational decision-making.
